Tribute to Lucy
Lucy was a dog of mixed breeding, mostly black and white corgi, and with
a high degree of intelligence. Her owners didn't do the right thing by
her - they didn't train her, feed her properly, or look after her, even
in her old age. But they were strict as far as what she did.
Lucy would sneak away from her place when she could, and come down to
visit. As she trotted along the road, she would look back over her
shoulder to make sure no one was watching. Then as Lucy entered our
yard, she would hide behind the wheel of the ute and wait for someone to
notice her.
She loved being taken for walks, while she was still physically able to
move easily. In later years, her back legs kept giving way, and later
she was put to sleep because she couldn't get up any more - at least her
owners gave her that dignity. Anyway, Lucy would race ahead, and then
suddenly stop, sniffing around. Then she would let you get ahead, and
then race to catch up. Lucy always raced you back into the yard, too,
wanting to be first through the gate. She usually won.
Lucy would also chase rabbits, after giving them a very large head
start.
Never a dog for affection, she would lick you vigorously if you touched
her feet to see why she was limping (and it was not a friendly lick). I
once removed a thorn from her paw, but she protested the whole time.
Lucy was the only dog I allowed in my car. She would curl up on the
floor, sit on the front seat, or if she thought she was in trouble with
you, jump over into the back. If you patted the front seat, sometimes
she jumped back into the front with you.
She is sorely missed.
