Our Vet Stories
 |
We have a blue cattle dog named Smokie (Bear) who is now 10 years of age.
I received Smokie as a wedding present from my now husband.
Anyway it started when he was about 6 months of age, we took him for his
first ride/run while we were out on our horses. Mistake number one.
Smokie stopped quickly and Bo stood on the tip of his tail. Stripped all
the skin/hair off the top, left only the bone sticking out. First trip
to the vet, to have his tail chopped and fixed.

Second - A friend's dog bit Smokie and an abscess arose on his back. Vet
trip to have lanced and dried out.
Third - Starting up chainsaw, chainsaw was idoling, Smokie thought it was
the enemy and bit the end. Lucky it only cut his mouth. Another trip,
more tablets.
Fourth - Had to have his dew claws taken out has he kept knocking and
damaging them.
Fifth - Awoke one Saturday morning, called Smokie, didn't come, we went
looking for him. Saw him crawling around the corner of the house.
Rushed him to the vet thinking he has a tick. Whilst waiting for the vet,
Smokie started walking fine. Big after hours bill and she thought he had
pinched a nerve. We were relieved.
Besides these above accidents he also went for general check ups and
needles. We were averaging the vets about once a month for the first year.
Believe me, there was no abuse involved, all his own doing.
He is a tough dog - other stories, jumping out of the car window that was
part way down while moving, couldn't find a reason for this, while tied
up in the back of the ute, still tried to jump out if he saw another dog.
Jumping off a second story balcony to reach his master. Fights with his
best doggy friends. Jumping of the high verandah when visitors arrived.
Trying to fight with the dog next door, got his own head stuck through
the fence and had his own head bitten not once but twice.
This is about all that I can think of at the moment. Smokie being a
Cattle dog has no fear and goes head first then feels sorry for himself later while being patched up.
He now takes things a bit easier at the age of 10, but if challenged he
will not back down to another dog. He now does a bit of agility to keep
his mind of his rugged past.
Believe me, Smokie is very spoilt as he is our first child and has a very
good life.
Are there any other Cattle dog stories like this to tell about?
