Schipperke

Schipperke
Bait's Kennel

Originating in Belgium, the Schipperke's name derived from its use as a watchdog and ratter on Belgian and Dutch barges, pronounced "Skipper-key and means "little captain".

A very intelligent breed and very loyal means it makes an excellent, although small, watchdog.

Coat: Medium length, fairly thick and usually black, butsometimes cream and other colors. There should be no other markings. It requires cobing and brushing several times a week to keep it in top condition.

Weight: 5-7kg

Height: Around 30cm (12 inches)

The Schipperke is quite happy living in a restricted space because of its barge dog background, it's a very alert, energetic dog so loves play and regular excersise, but does not need large amounts. They will fit in to any family situation because of their loyalty and family orientation.

Shar Pei

If you have a Shar Pei please join Barking Buddies!

Originating in China around 2000 years ago, it was used by the Chinese as a herding and guard dog, dog fighting and as... food. In 1978 in was listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the worlds rarest dog after it fell into disflavour in China.

Coat: loose wrinkly skin with a bristly short coat. Black, red and light and dark shades of cream or fawn.

Weight: 17-25kg

Height: Around 50cm

Once known for its aggressive temperament, the Shar Pei has now mellowed quite a bit through careful breeding. When buying a pup it's a good idea to ask to see both parents and other relations to ensure they have a good temperament. You'll need to pay attention to deep wrinkled areas while grooming to protect against skin problems. It can be a great watchdog, but they seem to like to fight with other dogs, so consider that before buying, and they can be very stubborn and strong willed, not the easiest dog to own by any means, but with the correct training and handling should fit into a family situation.

Weight: 5-8kg

Height: Around 25cm

A very intelligent dog, great personality, small in size and loves to be a lap dog. They will get most of the excersise they need around the house but enjoy going outside for play as well. Makes a great indoor dog for someone that likes to lavish plenty of attention to that long coat.
