Australian Kelpie

Kelpie
Butch's Kennel

(Kelpie Cross)

The origins of the Kelpie are unclear. It is widely thought that the Kelpie was developed from smooth haired Border Collies imported from Scotland. The Australian wild dog, the Dingo is said to have been incorporated into the breed, however since Dingos are known to hunt and kill sheep, this is unlikely. Kelpies are best suited to the work they where bred for, working sheep in the arid Australian outback. One of the most intelligent breeds of dogs, the Kelpie is very loyal and hard working. The name Kelpie was widely used by the Australian sheep farming community by 1872.

Coat: short, dense, with black and tan, black, red, red & tan, fawn, blue smoke or chocolate.

Height: about 45-50 cm.

Unless you have a large area to excercise your Kelpie very often, unless you are prepared to put a lot of time and effort into training it, the Kelpie is far better left to farmers and stockmen. Boundless energy and high intelligence means it requires a solid training regime. If you have the room, and the time, you will be rewarded with a loyal, fast learning dog who will fit into a family environment and be the best dog you ever had or likely to have. A truly amazing dog in it's ability to understand your requests and it willingness to please.
