The german Shepherd came from Germany, in the 1880's. The exact orgin is not known, however it is thought to be made up of various breeds of sheepdog and possibly wolf.


Coat: Rough-coated, long rough-coated and the long-haired. Colours are black with tan, sable or all black, and other colours.

Weight: 35 - 40 kg.

Height: about 55 - 60 cm.

German Shepherds are very loyal, obedient and have a high learning ability, for these reasons they are often used as working dogs. A well bred and trained dog will fit into a family environment. They are very intelligent and learn readily. They are protective of their owners, to avoid agression towards strangers and for a well adjusted dog all round, it's important they receive firm but gentle training, plenty of exercise and activities and lots of your time. They have been used for herding, as guard dogs, guide dogs, police, military, search and rescue and lots of other activities.

The Golden Retriever comes from the British Isles. They are a result of crosses of setters, yellow flat coated Retrievers, Tweed Water Spaniels, the Newfoundland and possibly the Bloodhound. They are guides for the blind, therapy dogs, used for hunting, tracking and more.


Coat: Medium length, cream to golden coloured.

Weight: 25 - 35 kg.

Height: about 55 - 60 cm.

Golden Retrievers are intelligent and easily trained. They are very good with children and make a great family dog. They don't usually attack strangers or other dogs but they make good watchdogs by warning you when strangers approach by barking. People use them in lots of activities like retrieving and agility. They like lots of attention and will need daily exercise.
