Vaccination.

Puppies and dogs are at risk from a number of serious infections. A vaccination programme will protect them from most of these diseases.

Diseases prevented by Vaccination.

Canine Parvovirus
Dogs and puppies can die within 24 hours of contracting this disease. It is most severe in young puppies.
Symptoms:
Vomiting and diarrhoea (usually with blood), severe abdominal pain and depression, as well as, in some cases, heart failure.
The disease can remain in the environment for over 12 months, and kennel ares should be regularly disinfected.

Canine Distemper

A highly contagious and deadly viral disease which affects all ages of dogs, with puppies being at most risk. It attacks the nervous system.
Symptoms:
Fever, discharge from the eyes and nose, respiratory problems, loss of appetite, skin reactions, vomiting, diarrhoea and muscle spasms and convulsions.
Dogs that do recover usually have thickened foot pads, permanent brain damage and progressive paralysis.

Canine Hepatitis

A highly infectious disease which can cause severe and mild pain in dogs and puppies. Puppies are at most risk.
Symptoms:
Fever, ocular lesions, damage to brain and lungs, jaundice, depression, lack of appetite, diarrhoea and abdominal pain (due to an enlarged liver).
The virus is passed from infected dogs through their urine and can continue to infect dogs for months after recovery. It can also cause long term kidney and liver problems in older dogs.

Kennel (Canine) Cough.

This disease is caused by a complex of many viruses and bacteria. The main 2 components of Kennel Cough are Parainfluenza type II and Bortadella bronchiseptica.
This disease is not fatal, and causes a persistent hacking cough. It is a distressing disease, which can be treated with antibiotics, but it is best to prevent the disease in the first place, by vaccination.

Canine Leptospirosis

A disease commonly associated with dogs and puppies that come into contact with rats and native rodents. It is common in areas around rubbish tips and of annual crop harvests. Your vet will advise if vaccination is required for this disease.

Vaccination Guidelines

Vaccinate at:
8-12 weeks
12-14 weeks
16-18 weeks

Annual Vaccinations- Protection from vaccination declines over time and it is advised that you re-vaccinate your dog every 12 months to ensure ongoing and strong immunity. Please discuss the vaccination program with your veterinarian.
