Lead researcher on the Miami University study, Allen R McConnell, explained that pet owners had greater self-esteem, were physically fitter, less lonely, more conscientious, more extroverted and less fearful than non-owners.

Other research carried out by the Pet Foods Manufacturers Association uncovered that nearly a third of the 2,000 adults questioned said they thought their pet made them a healthier person.
