Cabbies get stern guide dog warning
NSW Australia taxi drivers regularly deny Graeme Innes and his travelling partner Jordie a ride through the streets of Sydney.

They may have thought twice if they’d known he was Australia’s Human Rights and Disability Discrimination Commissioner.

Mr Innes is blind, and he says the sight of his guide dog Jordie is enough to turn some cabbies away. His job requires him to take about 15 cab rides a week. Mr Innes said a taxi driver refuses or baulks at picking him up about once every six weeks.

They claim they’re afraid of the golden Labrador, or that she will make their vehicle dirty. One said it was against his religion to carry the animal in his car. Mr Innes said the reasons for denying a ride to those with a guide dog stemmed from a basic lack of understanding. “Taxi authorities need to do two things,” he said. “They need to do better disability awareness training and they need to impose penalties where it’s appropriate.”

The NSW Government yesterday warned taxi drivers they face heavy fines if they refuse to take passengers with guide dogs, after health groups joined in the call for action. Transport Minister John Watkins said he was aware some guide dogs were not being allowed into taxis, but that the Government was committed to ensuring all drivers complied with the law giving them access. “I need to make the point very clear to the taxi industry and to taxi drivers. This is illegal, with a fine of up to $1100,” Mr Watkins said.

Vision Australia and Guide Dogs NSW both agreed it was an issue and called for greater education to improve disability awareness. However, Mr Innes said the issue had given taxi drivers a bad rap, considering the majority of drivers went out of their way to assist the visually impaired.

NSW Taxi Council spokeswoman Tracey Cain said there had only been one official complaint of a person with a guide dog being refused service by a cab in the last 12 months. She said NSW had an extensive training system, unlike other states, to ensure taxi drivers were aware of the laws and their obligations. New taxi drivers in NSW undergo compulsory guide dog training sessions.

Rocky the hero recovers
Rocky has pulled through - thanks to Zap the 63 kilogram rottweiler.

Rocky, the two-year-old German shepherd who took two bullets trying to save his elderly owner when three masked home invaders broke into a Sydney home on Monday night, underwent an operation yesterday afternoon.

One of the bullets fired at Rocky grazed his cheek, narrowly missing his brain, during the raid in Court Street, Kingsford.

"A couple of inches to the left and he would have been toast," said specialist surgeon John Culvenor at the North Shore Veterinary Specialist Centre in Crows Nest.

This morning, the plucky dog was "looking great", a spokeswoman at the centre said.

"He's still a bit weak, but it's looking pretty good.

"We're happy with how he's going - he'll probably be here for another week."

Mr Culvenor removed the two bullets during a two-hour operation yesterday and handed them over to police for ballistic tests.

But it was Zap the rottweiler who also got Rocky through his two-hour operation - he donated half a litre of blood.

"Zap is a longtime patient of ours," said Mr Culvenor, who also installed an external stainless steel frame to help Rocky's broken leg heal.

He said Zap's owner was "a really nice guy" who brought in his substantial pet when blood was needed in an operation - which had happened on about six occasions so far.

He said Zap's help was "tremendously important".

Mr Culvenor said Rocky would make a full recovery, although he would have to stay at the surgery for at least a week and it would be up to four months before his external frame could be removed.

"Barring bad luck [such as infection], he should make a good recovery."

He said more than 20 people had offered to help fund Rocky's operation, which is likely to cost between $4000 and $6000.
